Grilled cheese is and incredibly versatile dish that can be as simple or complex as you like. Here, we dress it up with some delicious smoked gouda cheese, and crisp, thinly sliced local apples.
Smoked gouda cheese, shredded
Crisp apples, thinly sliced (we recommend SweeTango or Honeycrisp)
Hearty bread of choice, sliced
Additional filling ideas include cooked bacon, ham, dijon or honey mustard, caramelized onions, or onion jam.
Lay out slices of bread, and layer on apple slices, shredded cheese and any other fillings, if using.
Top with second slice of bread and slather top slice with a generous amount of butter.
Heat skillet to medium heat. Once it’s hot, place your sandwich in, buttered side down. Take this time to butter the other side.
Cook 3-4 minutes on the first side, or until golden brown. Carefully flip. Cook another 2-3 minutes, pressing down a couple of times. When the bottom is golden brown and the cheese is gooey and melty, you’re ready to enjoy!
